Train Agility and Change-of-Direction Safely
Cutting, decelerating, and planting-and-going are the exact movement patterns most non-contact ACL tears happen in — which makes them both the riskiest thing an athlete does and the thing they can't skip training, since it's what their sport demands. The goal here isn't to avoid these movements; it's to build them on top of the strength and landing mechanics covered above, so the body has the tools to handle the load safely.
Start slow. Practicing a cutting motion at half speed, focusing purely on knee position and a controlled plant foot, builds the same neuromuscular pattern that shows up later at full speed — and it's far easier to correct a mistake at a jog than at a sprint. Deceleration drills, where an athlete sprints and is cued to stop under control rather than skid to a stop, train the exact braking mechanism that fails right before a lot of tears happen. Only once these patterns are clean and repeatable should speed be added back in.
